The Padenghe sul Garda Castle
The structure, an ancient stronghold dating back to the 12th century, with a 20 m high square defense tower, stands on a hill overlooking the town. Inside the walls, which can be accessed via an arched portal with a drawbridge, there are some houses divided by two streets.
The castle, attested as existing in 1145, was probably built on the ruins of a previous building (10th century). The building was recognized in 1154 among the assets granted by the emperor Federico Barbarossa to the bishop of Verona Teobaldo. The castle has always been the subject of disputes between Brescia and Verona until 1328, when it came into the possession of the Scaligeri. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was disputed by the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan. The castle remained in the possession of the Venetians from 1520 to 1796. In the following years the moat was buried to defend the manor.
In the sixties the complex underwent an important restoration with consolidation of the perimeter walls.
Barbieri Palace
Initial investigations show that a part of the building already existed around the sixteenth century and this is demonstrated by the discovery made during the restoration work.
The palace, built on old walls, is a beautiful building which was later enlarged with renovations and reconstructions. It has a U-shaped eighteenth-century, facing south and structured on two floors.
The portal, in ashlar stone, dates back to 1791 and opens onto an atrium formed by six columns supporting cross vaults The ground floor of the left side leads to the old cellars, while in the right wing of the ground floor there are rooms with decorated walls, restored to their original beauty.
A magnificent ivory marble staircase leads to the first floor, now home to the various municipal offices.
The Parish church of S. Emiliano
The “Pieve” rises outside the current town, on a small morainic "promontory" not far from the mighty castle, on the road to Lonato.
It is a small religious building from the Romanesque period, built in stone and chronologically ascribable to the 11th-12th century.
S. Emiliano lost its cultic centrality when the new parish church was built in the center of the town. The decline continued, until the final abandonment and desecration of the temple.
The church was restored in the 1950s and it is now appreciated above all for the homogeneity and compactness of the architectural apparatus.
Church of Santa Maria Assunta
What is immediately striking about the Padenghe Cathedral is its atypical location, near a road crossing and in a peripheral area. The case is quite rare, perhaps unique, in fact all the parish churches of the neighboring villages are located in the center or in a dominant location.
This atypicality suggests that the building was originally a xenodochio, a shelter for strangers and pilgrims, most likely built by the Benedictine monks of Maguzzano. The date of construction is unknown: the first mentioned is 1454, the year of the pastoral visit of Bishop Ermolaio Barbaro who, on that occasion, consecrated the Church of St. Mary and dedicated the main altar to the nativity of the Virgin.
Church of Santa Maria della Neve
The Confraternity of S. Giovanni Decollato, also known as the Confraternity of the Discipline, arose in Padenghe in the second half of the 16th century. It was an association of Christian laity, who gathered voluntarily to pray and promote works of piety. It was called the "Discipline" because the activity originally also provided for the scourging by means of an instrument, called "discipline", consisting of a bunch of cords gathered around a handle and having knots or wooden balls at the ends.
The decision to build its own church dates back to the end of the sixteenth century and the works were completed in 1606, when the stone portal bearing the following inscription was put in place:
DEO OPT. MAX. DEI PARAEQ VIRG. AD NIVES PRAECURSORI SOCIETAS DISCIPLINOR DICAVIT YEAR MDCVI
Translated: The Company of Disciplines dedicated this Church in the year of the Lord 1606 to God Excellent and Maximus, to the Virgin of the Snow, who is equal to God and the Forerunner of Christ.
Church of the Blessed Virgin of Torricella
According to tradition, in 1527, on the road that leads from Padenghe to Soiano, in the locality of Torricella, the Madonna appeared to the son of master Mattia Vagolino. Another tradition reports that the Madonna appeared to a young mute, who was grazing geese in that corner of the countryside. The fact is that the faithful came in large numbers and a chapel was soon started to be built in memory of the miraculous apparition, despite a certain opposition on the part of the bishop of Verona.
The Church of Pratello
The Church of the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of S. Eurosia originates from the will of Colonel Luigi Nicolini, who lived in Pratello, a small district of Padenghe. After having honorably served in the army of the Serenissima – Venice - and having no children, he left all his possessions so that a church in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected in that district. The works began in 1720 and were entrusted to the master Defendo Ceresa of Lonato and ended in 1723. A few years later it was enlarged with the construction of the sacristy and the bell tower.
The Rio Vasorì
The Rio Vasorì holds a singular record: it is the shortest river in Italy. It arises from the slopes of the “Sorgenti Fredde” - Cold Springs - and was used, before the advent of electricity, in numerous services. In the district Monte carried its waters to the wheels of the Gabanas’ mill and, going down, to that of the Berettas’ oil mill. From here, through the town and passing under several tenements, it went to spin the spinning mill wheel and to operate the existing mallet in a house in Via Prais (near the West Garda Hotel). Finally, after turning the wheel of the Mulino Viola, he arrived at the “Fabbrica del Vetro” to finally flow into the lake and enjoy a well-deserved rest after many performances.
The wines of Padenghe sul Garda
The vineyards of Valtenesi produce high quality grapes and a wide range of wines, especially reds, with excellent organoleptic qualities and an alcohol content of around 11 ° - 12 °. In the variety of grapes grown, Groppello is the most representative vine: a red grape variety considered an oenological rarity, as it is grown only in Valtenesi, which is the basis of all red and rosé wines of this area.
Garda Classico Chiaretto
It is certainly the most original and characteristic wine of the Denomination. It is unique in its very pleasant characteristics, obtained from the red grapes of the Garda Classico red, but vinified in such a way as to obtain a rosé wine with a “rose petal” colour. It differs from the rosé wines of the rest of the world for its surprising floral and wild fruit aromas, accompanied by the right acidity that determines a great freshness of taste sensations, and by a structure that for a rosé is to be defined as exceptional. Wine to be drunk young to fully appreciate its bursting typicality, it is perfectly suited to several delicate and summer dishes, to tasty fish, to white meats even quite spicy, to appetizers, cooked vegetables and sweet cured meats.
Garda Classico Rosso and Garda Classico Rosso Superiore
Obtained from the joint vinification of Groppello (min.30%), Marzemino (min.5%), Barbera (min.5%) and Sangiovese (min.5%), it marries local varieties (Groppello and Marzemino) and varieties spread across the international (Barbera and Sangiovese) to capture the best of the viticultural and enological potential of the area in a synthesis of particular typicality. Wine with a good structure which, if young, is a rich complement to not excessively demanding lunches, while in the Superior type, one year aged at least by product specification, with a minimum alcohol content of 12 °, it lends itself to accompanying red meat or game dishes , the typical meat dish “spiedo bresciano”, up to the most elaborate dishes of the great national and international cuisine.
Garda Classico Groppello and Groppello Riserva
It is the most typical wine of the area, a delicate and ready-to-drink red, spiced with fruity notes, velvety and pleasant, which goes well with savory first courses, all kinds of meat dishes and medium-aged cheeses. By choosing the best vineyards and sometimes following a careful selection of the grapes, after aging for at least two years, the "Riserva" is obtained, a richer product, intensely spiced with sweet spices, full-bodied, with an excellent flavor thickness, always very enveloping but with soft tannins, suitable for medium aging, to combine with savory dishes of red meats such as for example the typical “spiedo bresciano”, any with main courses of Lombardy regional cuisine.
Garda Classico White
Rhenish Riesling and Italic Riesling must make up the blend for at least 80%. To the eye it is transparent and shiny, straw-colored in tone, fresh and attractive. It goes well with lake fish, shellfish, seafood, rice dishes and vegetable flans.
